How To Do
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the barbell with hands just outside your knees. Keeping your back straight and chest up, drive through your heels to lift the bar by extending your hips and knees, keeping the bar close to your body. Fully stand up at the top, then lower the bar back down with control, maintaining a straight back throughout.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, with the barbell positioned on the floor in front of you. Ensure the barbell is loaded with an appropriate weight.
- Bend at your hips and knees to lower your body into a squat position. Grip the barbell with both hands, using an overhand grip, with your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your back straight, chest up, and shoulders slightly in front of the barbell. Engage your core and glutes to stabilize your body.
- Begin the lift by driving through your heels and extending your hips and knees simultaneously. Keep the barbell close to your body as you lift it off the ground.
- As the barbell passes your knees, fully extend your hips and stand upright, locking out your knees and hips at the top of the movement.
- Lower the barbell back to the ground in a controlled manner by bending your hips and knees, keeping your back straight and the barbell close to your body.
- Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What muscles does the Barbell Clean Deadlift work?
- The Barbell Clean Deadlift primarily targets your upper legs, especially the quadriceps and hamstrings, as well as your glutes. Secondary muscles engaged include the lower back, core muscles like the abs, and your shoulders, making it a highly effective full-body strength movement.
- What equipment do I need for the Barbell Clean Deadlift and are there alternatives?
- You’ll need a standard barbell with appropriate weight plates to perform the Barbell Clean Deadlift. If you don’t have access to a barbell, you can modify the exercise using a pair of heavy dumbbells or a trap bar, though the movement pattern will be slightly different.
- Is the Barbell Clean Deadlift suitable for beginners?
- Beginners can perform the Barbell Clean Deadlift with light weights to focus on form and technique before progressing to heavier loads. Start with a manageable resistance and consider working with a trainer to ensure proper posture and movement mechanics.
- What are common mistakes to avoid during the Barbell Clean Deadlift?
- Common mistakes include rounding the lower back, letting the bar drift away from your body, and jerking the weight up instead of lifting smoothly. Keeping your chest up, shoulders back, and engaging your core throughout the lift will help prevent injury and improve performance.
- How many sets and reps should I do for the Barbell Clean Deadlift?
- For strength training, aim for 3–5 sets of 4–6 reps with heavier weight and longer rest periods. For general fitness or muscle endurance, 3 sets of 8–12 reps with moderate weight and shorter rests work well.
- What safety tips should I follow when doing the Barbell Clean Deadlift?
- Always warm up properly before lifting heavy weights and use a weight you can control with good form. Keep the bar close to your body, engage your core, and maintain a straight back to avoid putting excessive strain on your spine.
- Are there variations of the Barbell Clean Deadlift I can try?
- Yes, you can try variations like the deficit clean deadlift for increased range of motion, or the power clean for a more explosive movement. Switching to a trap bar or using a snatch grip can also target muscles differently and keep your training varied.
