How To Do
Stand on the edge of a step with the balls of your feet, heels hanging off, and a resistance band anchored under your feet while holding the ends in each hand. Keeping your core engaged and back straight, rise up onto your toes against the band’s resistance, then slowly lower your heels below the step for a full calf stretch. Move in a controlled manner and avoid bouncing at the bottom.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand on a slightly elevated surface, such as a step or a weight plate, with the balls of your feet on the edge. Your heels should be hanging off the edge.
- Place a resistance band under the balls of your feet. Hold the ends of the band in each hand, keeping your arms straight.
- Keep your back straight, core engaged, and head looking forward. This is your starting position.
- Exhale and raise up onto the balls of your feet, contracting your calf muscles. You should feel tension in the resistance band as you rise.
- Hold the top position for a moment, squeezing your calves.
- Inhale and slowly lower your heels back down below the edge of the surface, stretching your calf muscles. Control the descent and don't let your heels drop suddenly.
- Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What muscles does the Band Calf Raise work?
- The Band Calf Raise primarily targets the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in your lower legs. These muscles are responsible for plantar flexion, helping you push off the ground when walking, running, or jumping.
- What equipment do I need for a Band Calf Raise and are there any alternatives?
- You need a sturdy resistance band and a step or raised surface to perform a Band Calf Raise. If you don’t have a band, you can perform bodyweight calf raises or use dumbbells for added load.
- Is the Band Calf Raise suitable for beginners?
- Yes, beginners can safely perform Band Calf Raises as long as they choose a light to moderate resistance band. It’s important to focus on slow, controlled movements to build strength and improve ankle stability.
- What are common mistakes to avoid with Band Calf Raises?
- Avoid bouncing at the bottom of the movement, as this reduces muscle engagement and increases injury risk. Also, make sure your feet are positioned evenly on the step to prevent strain on one side.
- How many sets and reps should I do for Band Calf Raises?
- For general strength and endurance, aim for 3 sets of 12–20 controlled reps. Adjust band resistance according to your fitness level, increasing tension as your calves get stronger.
- Are there any safety tips for performing Band Calf Raises?
- Ensure the band is securely anchored under your feet to prevent snapping or slipping. Keep your core engaged and move slowly to protect your ankles and avoid unwanted strain.
- What are some variations of the Band Calf Raise?
- You can perform single-leg Band Calf Raises to isolate each calf, or adjust your foot angle to emphasize different parts of the calf muscle. Seated Band Calf Raises can also target the soleus more directly.
