How To Do
Stand facing away from the suspension trainer, holding the handles with arms extended at shoulder height. Lift one leg straight in front of you and, keeping your core engaged and back straight, lower into a squat on the standing leg. Push through your heel to return to standing, using the handles for balance.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand tall, facing away from the anchor point of the suspension trainer. Hold the handles with an overhand grip and your arms extended forward at shoulder height.
- Lift your right leg off the ground and extend it straight out in front of you, keeping your left leg slightly bent.
- Lean back slightly and engage your core muscles to maintain balance.
- Slowly lower your body by bending your left knee and keeping your back straight. As you squat down, your right leg should extend further forward.
- Descend until your left thigh is parallel to the ground or as low as you can comfortably go.
- Pause for a moment at the bottom of the squat, then push through your left heel to return to the starting position.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs and perform the exercise on the other side.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What muscles does the Suspender Single Leg Squat work?
- The Suspender Single Leg Squat primarily targets the glutes and upper legs, especially the quadriceps and hamstrings. It also engages the calves, core muscles, and lower back for stability and balance.
- What equipment do I need for a Suspender Single Leg Squat, and can I substitute it?
- This exercise is typically performed using a suspension trainer like TRX straps. If you don’t have one, you can use resistance bands anchored overhead or perform a bodyweight pistol squat for a similar challenge.
- Is the Suspender Single Leg Squat suitable for beginners?
- Yes, beginners can perform this exercise using the suspension trainer for balance and support, making it easier than a free-standing pistol squat. Start with a partial range of motion to build strength and confidence before progressing to deeper squats.
- What are common mistakes to avoid during the Suspender Single Leg Squat?
- Common errors include rounding the back, letting the knee collapse inward, and placing too much weight on the suspended leg. Keep your core tight, push through the heel of the standing leg, and maintain proper alignment to maximize benefits and prevent injury.
- How many sets and reps should I do for Suspender Single Leg Squats?
- For strength training, aim for 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps per leg. If your goal is endurance, use 2–3 sets of 15–20 reps with controlled movements, ensuring good form throughout.
- What safety tips should I follow when doing this exercise?
- Make sure your suspension trainer is securely anchored before starting. Perform the movement slowly, avoid jerking the straps, and keep your weight centered over the standing leg to reduce stress on the knees and lower back.
- Are there variations of the Suspender Single Leg Squat I can try?
- You can modify by holding the squat position for a few seconds at the bottom to increase time under tension, or add a small jump for power training if you have the strength and stability. Another variation is performing the movement with your lifted leg extended backward to target different muscle groups.
