How To Do

Attach a resistance band at face height and hold the ends with an overhand grip, arms extended and band taut. Pull the band toward your face, keeping elbows high and rotating your shoulders so your palms face up at the end of the movement. Focus on squeezing your upper back and controlling the band as you return to the start.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Attach a resistance band to a sturdy anchor point at face height or slightly above.
  2. Hold the ends of the band with an overhand grip, palms facing each other, and stand far enough away from the anchor point that the band is taut.
  3. Pull the band towards your face, keeping your elbows high and pointing outwards.
  4. As the band reaches your face, externally rotate your shoulders so that your palms face upwards.
  5. Slowly reverse the movement, controlling the band back to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What muscles do Band Face Pulls work?
Band Face Pulls primarily target the rear deltoids in your shoulders and the upper back muscles, including the rhomboids and trapezius. This makes them great for improving posture and strengthening muscles often underworked in traditional pressing movements.
Can I do Band Face Pulls without a resistance band?
The exercise is designed for resistance bands, but you can use a cable machine with a rope attachment as an alternative. If you don’t have access to either, light dumbbell reverse flys can be used to work similar muscle groups.
Are Band Face Pulls good for beginners?
Yes, Band Face Pulls are beginner-friendly because bands provide adjustable resistance and a lower risk of injury compared to heavy weights. Start with a light band to learn the movement pattern before increasing resistance.
What are common mistakes when doing Band Face Pulls?
A common error is pulling with the arms instead of engaging the upper back, which reduces effectiveness. Avoid shrugging your shoulders, keep elbows high, and focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together for optimal form.
How many sets and reps of Band Face Pulls should I do?
For general strength and posture improvement, aim for 3 sets of 12–15 reps. Use a resistance level that challenges you while still allowing proper form throughout all repetitions.
What safety tips should I follow for Band Face Pulls?
Ensure your resistance band is securely anchored to prevent accidents. Maintain controlled movements and avoid jerking the band, which can strain the shoulders or elbows.
Are there variations of Band Face Pulls for more challenge?
You can perform Band Face Pulls seated to reduce lower body assistance or use a heavier resistance band for increased difficulty. Performing them one arm at a time also helps address muscle imbalances and focuses on stability.
