Squeeze your back muscles at the end of the movement, then slowly return to the starting position.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you and your knees slightly bent. Keep your back straight and core engaged.
  2. Loop a resistance band around a sturdy object, like a pole or a heavy piece of furniture, at about waist height.
  3. Hold one end of the resistance band in one hand with an overhand grip (palm facing down). Your arm should be extended straight out in front of you.
  4. Pull the band towards your waist, keeping your elbow close to your body. As you pull, rotate your torso slightly towards the pulling arm.
  5. Squeeze your back muscles at the top of the movement.
  6. Slowly return to the starting position, controlling the resistance band.
  7. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
  8. Switch sides and repeat the exercise with the other arm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What muscles does the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row work?
This exercise primarily targets the back and upper back muscles, including the rhomboids and latissimus dorsi. It also engages the biceps and obliques due to the twisting motion, making it a great compound movement for both pulling strength and core rotation.
Do I need special equipment for the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row?
You only need a resistance band anchored securely at waist height. If you don’t have resistance bands, you can try a cable machine or even improvise with a towel and partner-assisted resistance, though bands are ideal for controlled tension.
Is the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row suitable for beginners?
Yes, it’s beginner-friendly as long as you use a light-to-moderate resistance band and focus on form. Beginners should prioritize slow, controlled movements and avoid excessive twisting to build strength safely.
What are common mistakes to avoid when doing the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row?
Common errors include rounding the back, jerking the band instead of pulling smoothly, and over-rotating the torso. Keep your spine neutral, engage your core, and control both the pull and release phases for maximum benefit.
How many sets and reps should I do for the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row?
For general strength and muscle tone, aim for 3 sets of 10–15 controlled reps per arm. Adjust resistance and volume based on your fitness level, and rest about 30–60 seconds between sets.
What safety tips should I follow for this exercise?
Ensure your band is securely anchored to prevent snapback accidents. Keep movements controlled, maintain proper posture, and avoid using excessive resistance until your form is solid.
Are there variations of the Band One-Arm Twisting Seated Row?
You can perform the movement without the twist for a more traditional row, or use both arms simultaneously to increase load. Increasing or decreasing the resistance band tension and experimenting with seated angles can also modify difficulty and muscle engagement.
